Remote sensing-based farming: the sky is the limit
Έναρξη 08:30 - Λήξη 10:00Remote sensing (RS), the science that allows the acquiring of data about the earth’s surface without being really in contact with it, has given rise to a wealth of practices and technologies that enable collecting, analyzing and monitoring land data without any physical devices on the ground and feed a variety of scientific domains such as meteorology, geology etc.
But RS is increasingly popular for agricultural purposes through the use of a wide array of advanced sensors mounted on platforms such as satellites, airplanes and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) allowing for large-scale diagnostics of fields and crops. Furthermore, the Sentinel satellites of EU’s Copernicus environment-monitoring programme allow to spot and share subtle changes in land surface via a free and open data policy. RS data are major enablers of Precision Agriculture (PA): their accessibility and integration contribute to unleashing the potential for a “smarter, leaner and cleaner” EU agricultural sector thanks to the unparalleled accuracy and large-scale coverage provided by RS practices and technologies.
This workshop aims to examine the current state of play and bottlenecks in bringing RS data and value-added Earth observation services to EU farmers and agri-food stakeholders from a technological (infrastructure), economic (business models & platforms), educational (skills) and academic (research) point of view.
