ICT-powered banking: the case of eID as key enabler

In the era of the ICT-driven 4th industrial revolution, citizens look for maximum convenience, but are also highly concerned about security and privacy. Electronic identification (eID) solutions have been developed as online authentication tools that can be used to access not only government services but also private-sector services, such as those offered by banks, in a secure way.
An eID can be used, for instance, to open a bank account from your own laptop or phone without ever needing to get up from your couch. Some would even argue that the process is more secure than face-to-face interaction with a bank clerk juggling with many tasks at once. However, eID solutions for banking weave a highly heterogeneous patchwork across the European Union, as the industry runs into a variety of barriers to the use of these consumer-coveted tools in a number of member states.
What are the main advantages associated with using eID in banking? How convenient and safe are eIDs? What can regulators do to further foster the availability of eID solutions throughout the EU? These questions and others will be explored at our next Digital In Practice Workshop.
