Connected cars, the open road to safety and competitiveness

Connected and/or automated cars are probably the most conspicuous avatar of smart mobility. While some debate the profound issue of pronouncing on whether those vehicles are another form of robots, others are busy trying to implement safer, more convenient and more comfortable ways to move people and goods across Europe. The latter also care about the competitiveness of the EU’s automotive and ICT industries.



Indeed, to remain competitive the EU will quickly have to adapt to challenges from globally changing mobility patterns, fast digitization and ever increasing consumer expectations. Europe is no longer an absolute leader in terms of regulatory standards. The market access benefits stemming from the free trade agreements and multilateral frameworks are becoming increasingly challenged. The Commission’s GEAR 2030 initiative focuses on: adapting the value chain to global challenges; the automated and connected vehicles; trade, international harmonization and global competitiveness.
